Escape NYE 2018 – featuring Bass Culture, nosnow/noalps, UJ/DV and more
Tigullio, St. Julians
Here at Underground Sound we have always believed that Malta punches above its weight when it comes to dance music. Throughout the year we have been closely following the promoters and artists that make this island bounce and we are excited to say that many of them will be all be under the same roof, playing their unique sounds that make up the fabric of the Maltese underground. No doubt we are spoiled for choice here.
We asked some of the line up to reflect on the events that made 2017 and what the outlook is for 2018. It appears there is just as much to expect in the coming year as there will be in the winding rooms of Tigullio, St. Julians.
“Our favourite events we played in this year were definitely Earth Garden, where we were hosting the opening night at the Enchanted Forest. We really had a blast at two of our own events: Panda Dub & Tetra Hydro K at Tigulio was mad and Mala & J. Sparrow at The Warehouse was legendary.”
“For NYE we’ll be starting off the night with some easy, light roots and reggae vibes and proceed to our heavier dub steppers selection to start off the new year with the good vibes of our basslines and the usual beautiful, smiley faces. Earthrocker, D3C3Li5 & Yabadub will be our selectors for the night, all powered by our favourite sound system, Island Rockers.

“For sure our favourite event was our 10 year anniversary show in February ‘moving mountains’ which was an amazing and emotional show, which is now available on DVD and hopefully will be shown on local TV very soon. Other than that we always look forward to local festivals like Rock the South, The beer festival and hopefully a tour abroad!”
“What have we learned this year? As musicians we have improved in many areas and everything else. I guess the trick is to just not to give up and keep moving. We hopefully will start the New Year by finishing our album, EP or whatever it’s going to become and finally entering the studio, hoping 1st January!”
“It was a fantastic year musically and as promoters we launched three distinct brands all happening at different times of the day respectively, which collectively cover the whole 24 hours: UJ/DV club nights 11PM–4AM, B4 Breakfast 3AM–8AM and Sunny Side Up 8AM–4PM. This was our dream – not follow the norm but to overflow onto “irregular” hours. With great thanks to our partner Nicholas Spiteri, all the UNO Village staff and our supporting sponsors, we managed to create a haven where first thing Sunday morning, one can come to this beautiful venue, grab a scrumptious breakfast catered by local food brands Dr. Juice and Biancos and slowly make it into the mix, dancing all day long.”
“Our favourite events were hands down our Sunny Side Up events. People underestimate the energy that the morning vibe brings to the party. We can’t not mention our B4 Breakfast event that happened during Gozo Carnival 2017 at Club Zuma, which was a crazy, crazy party. I guess the Carnival ‘scenario” and the costumes that came with it allowed people to be looser and more carefree. The MADA winter residency at The Playground was also sick and we are very grateful to be able to test our material week-in, week-out on the best acoustically sounding system on the island at the moment. Pure bliss.”
“Next year is going to be a build up on 2017 including a stronger and longer Sunny Side Up season jam packed with stellar line ups with local and international acts as well as some very interesting concept pop-up events which will be disclosed in due time. We will prioritise much time to the studio to prepare for a possible and hopeful international expansion. I guess you just have to keep an eye out for what’s cookin’ in the UJ/DV Kitchen.”
