Arriving from Europe: main hubs and killer deals

Nearly all direct flights to Malta come from the UK and Europe, so this section will be the most significant by far.

Flying to Malta from Europe, there are 5 countries with the most flights, those being the UK, Italy, Spain, France, and Germany. With this knowledge, they will have dedicated sections while the rest of Europe will be combined and covered afterwards.

Cheap flights to Malta from the UK

From the UK you have the most direct flight options from any country (thanks to colonialism I suppose). Granted, most of these are seasonal so if you’re searching during low travel months you’ll find less options.

With seasonal fluctuations to consider, we’ve found some outrageously cheap flights from across the UK. With deals as low as 20 euro, you’ll find cheap flights from Nottingham, Glasgow, and London. Granted you’ll find killer deals across the UK so consider cities from Birmingham to Edinburgh as well.

While Air Malta does have flights with both London airports, the low-cost airlines are where you will find the bulk of the options. After giving Ryanair a quick search, I found a crazy 25 euro one-way flight from Bournemouth to Malta in late June. If you plan far enough ahead, you’ll find killer deals even for peak summer.

Traveling between Italy and Malta: lots of cities & cheap deals

Although the UK has the most direct flight options, by both volume of flights and passengers carried, Italy takes the #1 spot easily. Which, when looking at proximity, makes sense.

Coming from Italy, you’ll often find the best deals from the Sicilian airports of Palermo and Catania. But don’t let that deter you from the hubs of Milan, Rome, and Naples on the mainland because they can be equally as dangerous for an enthusiastic traveler.

Other smaller hubs, like Bologna, Venice, Bari (among a few) are just as cost effective. For example, in mid-June there are one-way flights from the east coast city of Pescara for 18 euro.

Cheap flights to Malta from Spain

Spain is a straightforward country on flights to Malta. Available flights will be from Barcelona, Seville, Madrid, Valencia, and Girona. With Barcelona providing the most efficient flight options through Ryanair.

With a decent Spanish diaspora in Malta, it’s no surprise that one can find a really cheap flight on par with the ones from Italy.

Getting from France to Malta

As we move farther from the isles, the crazy deals start to dwindle and your more typical 50-150 euro flights can be found.

From the capital of Paris will have the most flights with multiple airline options while through the cities of Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and especially Nice can occasionally be a deal. You’ll see some seasonal flights with the airline Transavia as well.

Germany to Malta: Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg

While Air Malta has seasonal flights to Berlin, Lufthansa carries passengers from the more major hubs of Munich and Frankfurt. With additional options from Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, and Hamburg, you’ll find some surprises out of Cologne through of course, Ryanair. There are a number of smaller seasonal cities available too.

Finding airfare from the rest of Europe

As we increase the radius to the rest of Europe, most major airports will have a decent flight like Dublin, Lisbon, Porto, Budapest, and Vienna to name a few. However, the cheapest options will be in Eastern Europe. This includes Greece (through either Athens, Thessaloniki, or Chania), Cyprus (Paphos), Poland, and the greater Balkan region.

In the Balkans, the best flights I’ve found are through the capital cities of Belgrade, Skopje, and Sofia but a sleeper for one of the cheapest flights you’ll find is through the southern Serbian city of Niš. Just make sure to stop and get some Burek while you’re there. You’ll thank me later.

Traveling from Africa, Asia and the Middle East

From Africa, direct flights will be coming from the country of Tunisia, through the capital of Tunis. Although not direct, it shouldn’t be too difficult to pop between Morocco or Algeria too through cheap transfers via Spain or Italy.

From Asia and the Middle East, the choices are sparce apart from the main regional hub in Istanbul. But there are direct flights coming from Tel Aviv, parts of Russia, Yerevan in Armenia, and Abu Dhabi. Of these, Tel Aviv is your best hope for a cheaper flight but expect to pay at least 100 euros. You’ll also find some decent connections via Tbilisi and Cairo. For the airlines in this region, consider Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Aegean Airlines, and Air Pegasus along with the airlines previously mentioned.

Other cheap flights to Malta

Outside of the options mentioned above, you’ll have to transfer to get over to the Maltese isles. Again, Skyscanner and Google Flights will be your best resources here. Make sure to look at connections through main travel hubs for usually the cheapest route. This would include Amsterdam, Paris, Istanbul, and Rome for starters.

Best of luck on your travels and check out the Underground Guide Malta if you’re hungry for more.
