It’s said there are two guaranteed things in this world: death and taxes. But if you frequent festivals you have to throw a third element into the mix. We’re talking about the iconic Baja hoodie, better-known as, the drug rug.

No matter what festival you’re attending, we would wager that you have seen someone walking the festival grounds dripped in this popular festival clothing. Known for its warmth, comfort and versatility, it’s a travesty that we haven’t covered the drug rug/Baja hoodie yet.

Better late than never — here’s our top eight choices to cop from Amazon for your next festival.

First, a little history.

Mexican Baja Hoodie gains popularity

Originally, the Baja hoodie gained popularity in the US during the 60’s and 70’s. Although the garment has a deep indigenous history within Mexico, it was a handful of surfers who made it international traveling to ride the waves in Baja California, Mexico. These surfers would wear them after long surf sessions to dry off and keep warm, and later would bring them home to the states.

Drug rug gains its name

There are two main reasons that the Baja hoodie ended up with the name of the drug rug. Firstly, due to the possible use of hemp woven into the material, but more than likely due to its association with weed through the hippie movement.

As far as festival clothing goes, the drug rug should categorically be in your pack and on your back. They’re easy to maintain, offer warmth and comfort, and will protect you from the late-night hot rocks from that badly-rolled joint.

A classic in black and white

It’s a classic because the black and white is one of the most widely purchased, and you can never go wrong with dark colors in dirty environments. Regardless of the festival and location, you can almost certainly expect dirt and cold (yes, even in the desert).

Pink is the new black

Not everyone is a fan of black. So, in contrast to the above, we’re offering up this pink, purple and white drug rug for those with a more colorful outlook on life.

While attending festivals, this one in our experience is the one we’ve come across the most. It’s the red, yellow and green color combination. Usually worn by the person who’s almost always out of rolling papers or asking for a light. All while hanging out around the jamming area of a festival of course.

Sometimes the kangaroo pocket on the front of most Baja hoodies just doesn’t cut it. Here’s an option that comes with a bag that perfectly matches the hoodie, giving you more room to smuggle alcohol into the main stage grounds.

From the festival back to reality

This one has a more traditional hoodie look and in all honesty is our favorite. Mainly because you can wear it anywhere. It’s perfect for those who go straight back to the reality of your 9 to 5 after the festival.

Confused beach vibes

As mentioned in the intro, the Baja hoodie was, and still is a must have accessory for surfers. This brightly colored neon drug rug captures sunny Californian beach vibes, even if you’re lost and confused wandering around the toilets asking people where your friends are.

Hoodie or a poncho? Why not both?

While this one is more on the poncho side it still fits like a traditional Baja hoodie. Plus, there’s a lot more advantages to this one. Use it as a blanket or, due of the longer length and open bottom, you can rock a pair of Speedos underneath while in that hot environment like a beach festival.
