Sri Lankan born, Melbourne local DJ Söjourn is embarking on a journey that most of us dream about. With driving passion for music, he is an exciting young talent that we are stoked to share with you.

Check out his Special Guest Mix for UGS below followed by Shayne’s interview with him.

How were you introduced to the electronic scene in Melbourne?

I’ve always had a passion for electronic music, about two years ago I taught myself how to use a controller. Since then I’ve surrounded myself with like-minded people who play and enjoy electronic music.

What was your first gig?

My first gig was at ‘The Third Day’ in North Melbourne, where I played a two-hour techno set. The feeling was amazing and that’s what ignited my passion for playing and producing music.

Did you attend clubs / festivals before you started playing?

Yes I attended heaps of clubs such as 161, Revolver, Circus. Also festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Esoteric and Earthcore.

What are the major differences between a clubs and festivals?

To me, the difference between a club and festival is the atmosphere. Festivals are an open space with a large amount of people where as clubs are a more intimate scene.

What is Söjourn?

Sojourn is a very old French word that means ‘A temporary journey’. Which I feel resembles the music that I play.

What has been the major driving force behind you?

The driving force behind me purely comes from the passion and love I possess for music. The feeling of playing for a crowd is like no other, this motivates to keep focused and pursue my dream.

Do you have specific goals to achieve this year?

My goals this year is to produce my own music, play more gigs and sharpen my skills.

Where can we see/hear you in action?

I have an Instagram account with updated videos and future gigs will be announced through that platform. I also have a soundcloud account with updated mixes.

What would you like to say to the community both locally and abroad?

It’s never too late to pursue your dreams, if you’re willing to put in the work, anything is possible. You’ll be seeing and hearing much more of me.
